In May of 1861, a dramatic and deadly skirmish took place between a Union officer and the proprietor of the Marshall House (now home to the Monaco). The inn holds the distinction of being the site on which the first soldier of the Civil War died in the line of duty. Throughout the war thousands visited the inn, often taking a souvenir from the site as a remembrance.
